Getting Started

New to WatInside? Here's the quick path from install to your first organized box.

First launch

The onboarding walkthrough introduces the core ideas — storages, labels, the camera, search, and scanning. Tap "Get Started" when you're ready, or "Skip" in the top-right to jump straight in.

Set up your profile

Add a display name and avatar from your profile screen. This is optional — WatInside doesn't require an account, and everything works fine anonymously too.

Create your first storage

Tap the floating + button on the Storage tab. WatInside generates a unique code (like W123456) for the box automatically — give it a name, pick a location and type, and you're set. Print or save its QR code so you can scan it open later.

New installs automatically get full Premium features for the first 5 days — no purchase needed. Explore everything before deciding if you want to subscribe.

Storages & Boxes

A "storage" is any container you want to track — a moving box, a kitchen drawer, a garage shelf, a storage unit. Each one gets its own scannable code.

Browsing your storages

The Storage tab groups everything by location, showing your most recent boxes per location with a "Show more" toggle underneath. Use the filter chips above the grid to jump to All, Recent, a specific Type or Location, or flag anything Overdue or Temporary.

Editing a storage

Tap the menu on any storage card (or long-press the card) and choose Manage. From there you can rename it, change its location/type/size, update the cover photo, or add notes. You can also manage your list of custom Locations and Types from the same screen.

QR code & NFC

Every storage has a QR code you can copy, share, or print directly from its Manage screen. If your phone supports NFC, you can also write the storage's code to a physical NFC tag and stick it on the box — tapping your phone against it later opens that storage instantly, without opening the camera at all.

Deleting a storage

Use Delete from the menu or the Danger Zone in Manage. If the storage is part of a shared group, only the owner can delete it — other members will see it grayed out.

Free accounts can create up to 5 storages (or more with a purchased storage pack). Premium removes the limit entirely.

Managing Items

Items live inside storages. Add them with or without a photo, tag them, and set reminders so nothing gets forgotten.

Adding items

Tap the + inside any storage. By default it asks how you'd like to add the item (snap a photo or add without one) — long-press the button to set a default so it stops asking. Give the item a name or notes (at least one is required), attach a photo, and add tags.

Tags

Tags help you find things later — by search, by Siri, or through Spotlight. Type a tag and press comma to add it instantly, or paste several comma-separated tags at once. Writing #something in an item's notes automatically creates a tag for it too.

Custom fields Premium

Attach structured details to any item — text, numbers, dates, toggles, URLs, phone numbers, and more. Your most recently used field names are suggested automatically so you're not retyping "Warranty Expires" every time.

Quantity

Tap the quantity badge on an item to open the Quantity Manager — remove one, set an exact number, or clear it out entirely.

Careful: setting an item's quantity to 0 deletes the item, rather than leaving it at zero. If you just want to reduce the count, use "Set exact quantity" instead.

Multi-select & bulk actions

Long-press an item (or tap the checkmark icon) to select multiple items at once. A toolbar appears letting you delete, move, or mark several items as returned/removed in one go. In grid view, you can also drag a selection box across tiles to select many at once.

Moving items

Open an item, tap the menu, and choose "Move to…" to relocate it to a different storage. This works for single items or a whole multi-selected batch.

Lending & temporary removal

Mark an item as "Removed" (lent out, taken with you, etc.) and set an expected return date — WatInside reminds you when it's due. The item's status icon shows green (in place), yellow (temporarily out), or red (overdue) at a glance.

Search & Scanning

Three ways to find things: type it, scan it, or point your camera at it.

Smart search

The search bar understands more than plain text — try tag:holiday or location:garage to filter precisely. It's also typo-tolerant, so close spellings still find the right item.

Scan a QR code

Open the Scan tab, point your camera at any WatInside QR label, and it opens that storage instantly. Scan a code that doesn't match anything yet, and WatInside offers to create a new storage with that code pre-filled.

Scan handwriting

No QR code handy? Switch the scanner to Handwriting mode and WatInside reads a written or printed storage code directly off a label using on-device text recognition.

Scan NFC tags

If you've written a storage's code to an NFC tag, switch to NFC mode (or just tap your phone to the tag) to open it — no camera needed.

Scan to Find Premium

Point your camera at a storage while viewing a specific item to confirm whether that item is actually inside — handy when you're staring at a wall of identical bins.

AI Tagging & Assistant

WatInside can look at your photos and suggest tags, and includes a built-in chat assistant that can act on your inventory for you.

Automatic tagging

When you add a photo, WatInside suggests tags based on what's in the picture. There are three modes, chosen in Settings → Manage AI Provider:

  • On-device — always free, processes entirely on your phone.
  • Apple Intelligence Premium — higher-quality on-device suggestions on supported devices.
  • Cloud AI — the most capable option, using AI credits.

Suggested tags appear as tappable chips — accept the ones you want before saving. If your cloud AI credits run out mid-session, tagging automatically falls back to the free on-device mode so nothing breaks.

AI Chat Assistant

Ask the in-app assistant to help in plain language — "add this photo as a new item in the garage box," "where's my passport," "what's expiring this month," or "move my winter coat to the hall closet." You can even drop a photo straight into the chat to create an item from it.

The assistant can search, create, update, move, and organize items and storages, set reminders, and run quick inventory reports. For safety, it can never delete anything — you'll always do that yourself from the app.

Ask it "how do I…" for step-by-step help on any topic — storages, items, sharing, exporting, and more.

Shared Groups

Share your storages with family or roommates so everyone can see and update the same inventory. Premium

Create & invite

Create a shared group, add storages you own to it, then invite people using the built-in share sheet. iCloud Sync must be turned on first — WatInside will prompt you if it isn't.

Leaving or removing

Participants can leave a group at any time. Owners can remove a storage from a group (it stays on your device, just unshared) or delete the whole group, which unshares everything first.

Notifications & Reminders

WatInside can remind you before things expire, when appointments are due, or when stock runs low.

What can send a reminder

  • Expiration dates — set a lead time (on the day, 1–2 days, or a week before).
  • Appointment dates — same idea, for anything with a deadline.
  • Return dates — for items marked temporarily removed/lent out.
  • Low stock — get notified when quantity drops below a threshold you set.
  • Date-type custom fields — can schedule their own independent reminder.

Tapping any notification opens the app directly to that item. Make sure notifications are enabled in Settings → Smart Features.

Siri, Spotlight & Widget

Some of the fastest ways to use WatInside don't involve opening the app at all.

Ask Siri

  • "Where is my passport in WatInside?" — Siri tells you which storage it's in and opens it.
  • "Open garage shelf in WatInside" — jumps straight to that storage.
  • "Search overdue in WatInside" or "Search temporary in WatInside" — pulls up flagged items.

Spotlight

Swipe down on your Home Screen and search — your storages and items show up there too, and items are searchable by their tags, not just their name.

Home Screen widget

Add the WatInside widget for one-tap access to Chat, Scan, or Search — without unlocking into the full app first.

QR Labels & Printing

Print physical labels so any box is scannable the moment it's sealed.

Single label

Generate one QR code with its storage code printed underneath, ready to save, share, or print. Not happy with the code? Tap regenerate for a fresh one before you save.

Batch labels

Need a stack of labels before you start packing? "Print 12 Labels" generates a full sheet of 12 unique codes at once — perfect for a moving day.

Import & Export

Your data, portable. Premium

Export

Export everything (or a hand-picked selection) as JSON or CSV, optionally bundled with your photos. This doubles as a backup — keep a copy somewhere safe.

Import

Import a previous export to restore or merge data. WatInside matches storages by their code, so re-importing the same file updates existing storages instead of duplicating them.

Premium & Credits

What's free, what's Premium, and how AI credits work.

Premium unlocks

Unlimited storages, shared groups, custom fields, Apple Intelligence tagging, Scan to Find, and Import/Export. Subscribe monthly, yearly, or as a one-time Lifetime purchase from Settings → Upgrade to Premium.

AI credits

Cloud AI tagging uses credits — everyone gets a handful of free starter credits, Premium includes a monthly pool, and you can always buy extra credit packs if you need more.

Restore purchases & promo codes

Already subscribed on another device? Use "Restore Purchases" in Settings. Have a promo code? Enter it on the Paywall screen and WatInside hands off to Apple's official redemption flow to apply it.

Tips & Shortcuts

A handful of power-user moves that are easy to miss.

Long-press the + button in a storage to set its default action — Ask Every Time, Snap Photo, or Add Without Photo — so a normal tap stops asking.

Drag a selection box across item tiles in grid view while in multi-select mode to grab several items at once.

Type a comma while adding tags to commit one instantly — or paste several comma-separated tags at once to add them all.

NFC tags work outside the app too — any tag written with a WatInside storage link opens that storage the moment your phone touches it.

Use search qualifiers like tag:holiday or location:garage to narrow results instantly instead of scrolling.

Location sections default to showing your 2 most recent storages — tap "Show more" underneath to see the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to create an account?

No. WatInside works fully without any account or sign-up. Your data lives on your device and, if you enable it, syncs privately through your own iCloud.

Why did my item disappear after I changed its quantity?

Setting an item's quantity to 0 deletes it rather than leaving it at zero. If you want to keep the item at a lower count, use "Set exact quantity" instead of decrementing all the way down.

How do I back up my data before switching phones?

Turn on iCloud Sync in Settings so everything transfers automatically with your Apple ID, or use Export (Premium) to save a JSON/CSV copy you can import later.

Does "Reset All Data" also reset my AI credits?

No — Reset All Data wipes your storages, items, and settings, but your AI credit balance is left untouched on purpose.

What happens if my Cloud AI credits run out mid-tagging?

WatInside automatically falls back to free on-device tagging so your workflow isn't interrupted — you can top up credits any time from Settings.

Can the AI chat assistant delete things for me?

No, by design. The assistant can search, add, update, and organize your inventory, but any deletion has to be done by you directly in the app.

I found a bug or have a feature idea — what do I do?

Use Settings → Feedback → "Send Feedback" or "Report a Bug." Include a screenshot if you can — it helps a lot.

Still need a hand?

Reach out and we'll get back to you — or ask the in-app AI assistant, it can walk you through most things instantly.
